On Tuesday, October 14, 2003, I, Donna Digby with my family & friends at my side opened the first Scrapbooking store in Thunder Bay… DAT’S Scrapbooking.

Many ask why? Well, this is how it all became about.

On Thursday, May 21, 1998, our beautiful daughter, Amy, was born. With only six months of maternity leave, I found it very hard to go back to my job, but we couldn’t afford for me to stay at home with no income. So, we looked for a business with a house attached to it and we found Sandy’s Place.  This was a well-known coney dog shop and it was

now ours. I truly dislike cooking and I didn’t know what a coney dog was, but I would do anything to stay at home with our daughter.  My husband continued to work a full-time job outside of Sandy’s Place and assisted on his days off or whenever he was needed. We had been running Sandy’s Place for four years and it was really taking a toll on our lives. I loved my customers, but didn’t like anything else about the shop. I began to look for something else to do on the side. That is when I realized that one of my hobbies had finally become very popular in Thunder Bay. You guessed it… Scrapbooking!

Once I realized that scrapbooking had become so popular, I started selling some supplies in our coney dog shop in April of 2003. Within three months, we had moved the dairy cooler in front of our front window, sold off the pop cooler and turned over half of our store into a scrapbook supply store. Even though we knew my work load would double, we decided that it was time for a change. During Thanksgiving weekend of 2003, our family helped us remodel the coney dog shop into a scrapbooking supply store.

It was time to come up with a name. The one thing more important to me than my photographs is my family and close friends and anyone who knows me, knows that. It was only fit to have a name that would represent family. DAT’S is not only a slang word for “That’s”, but our initials, Donna, Amy, Trevor and our pug Sparkle.

When you come into our store, you are also, in a way, coming into our home and that’s the feeling we like to give people because you normally always feel comfortable at home. To me scrapbooking is meant to be fun and a way to help your photos tell more of the story. Hence, our slogan “Helping your photos tell more of the story” and that is all we are trying to do.

There are many different styles of scrapbooks and everyone has their own preferences and we try to help you find your style that makes you feel good and proud of your own work. Our stock is constantly changing to suit as many different scrapbookers as we can and even though we may be small in square footage, we have become masters at using every available space in our store.
